On 10 March, our grade 4 and 5 entrepreneurs traded the classroom for the spotlight with an educational trip to the Johannesburg People’s Theatre to see Shrek the Musical. While it was a day filled with laughter and ogres, it was also a deep dive into the “product development” of a professional stage production!
This trip wasn’t just about watching a show; it was a live laboratory for our current curriculum. Learners saw firsthand how the scripts they are currently writing in English & Drama transition into a living, breathing performance. In Life Skills, we’ve been focusing on body percussion and movement. Our entrepreneurs observed how professional actors (including children their own age!) use locomotor and non-locomotor movements to tell a story.
The entrepreneurial edge: "Show-preneurship"
At Radley, we believe every industry is an opportunity for entrepreneurship. We used this trip to explore how creative talents are monetised:
- Learners gained insight into the “behind-the-scenes” economy – from lighting and sound engineering to set design and stage management.
- Seeing young actors on stage reinforced the importance of public speaking and building personal confidence – essential traits for any CEO.
- We discussed the “business of show business,” helping entrepreneurs understand that creativity is a valuable asset that can be built into a successful career.
- It was an eye-opening experience that proved that with enough grit and practise, even the biggest dreams can become a reality!
